The people who lived during those four terrible years of civil war, soldiers and civilians alike, were so attached to the traditional holiday that they left many accounts of it. Other holidays might be forgotten in the stress of wartime, but Christmas was fondly remembered. Relying on diary and journal entries of both soldiers and civilians, we’ll look at many of the Christmas customs of the 19th century that survive today. We’ll look at what they were singing, eating and doing to mark this most special of days. And we’ll examine how war affected the traditional holiday celebration – both at home and at the front.
